So, I’ve been keeping a bit of a secret.

We’re taking a risk.
One that we said we’d never take.
See this house?
The uggliest one on the block?
Yeah, we bought it.
As of next Tuesday, we officially own a very ugly, very dated, very Brady house on an amazing street.
Need a drink?
Fancy some custom wallpaper?
How ’bout a bright and airy kitchen?
Not so much, huh?
At this point, I don’t know much, but here’s what I do know:
we are nuts but not scared.
we’ve been told one million times that this will be hard on our marriage, which I find very bold. I don’t tell people who just announced that they’re pregnant that it will be hard on their marriage, why drop that bomb on me over a little dry wall?
we’re going to be very broke.
not really, but basically. A renovation is no joke financially and each decision weighs on us. It is what it is, but we have to make sure that we’re making the right choices every step of the way.
we love the street and the yard is amazing for our boy.
the area is our dream neighborhood, the elementary school got the stamp of approval from our dear friend who happens to be a kindergarten teacher in another district and I have grand visions of the babe and the dog running around the back yard one day.
yes, we will gut the entire house to the studs and start from scratch.
it needs it.
and no, we don’t know how long we’ll live in Greenville.
it could be a two years (we were in Maine for 19 months) it could be five years, it could be 6 months. We never know, but we always buy our houses and make them our home for however long we live in them. If you’re counting, this is house number three in 2 years.
and oh yeah, I’ll be blogging the entire process.
lucky ya’ll!
This post was great and I loved reading your story. I have found that working with a custom home builder enables me to have my own house built under my own needs and requirements. I also know a lot of people who have gone with a home builder and have had great success working with this type of professional themselves.

Congratulations! I know you will have a ton of fun making it your own. I say keep the awesome wallpaper though. 😉
Congratulations! I think its an amazing adventure and so much fun to take the time and energy to make your new house yours! We're planning a full gut/remodel of our current house to start in 2 months {our newborn will be 3 months} so it will be fun to follow along on your next journey too!
Congratulations! You guys are going to be great throughout the process. And we are excited to follow along!
Congrats! You'll have so much fun! We just finished a renovation that took over a year – a total gut/couldn't live there until it was finished – and we survived. 😉 You'll be just fine! I can't wait to watch the progress!
We did the same thing 2 years ago. Wood paneling, shag carpet, drop ceilings had nothing on quiet street, great neighborhood, park around the corner. It was a challenging year doing most of the demo, construction, decorating, and moving ourselves but totally worth it! Good luck to you! Can't wait to see the progress!
Welcome back to the upstate! Looking forward to seeing the progress that you make with your house!
I'm actually so excited for you guys!!! Yeah, so what it will be stressful at times…when isn't a new experience in a marriage not stressful?? Just think about the end result that will come sooner than you think and it will an amazing accomplishment you did together that you show off with pride!! Can't wait for numerous renovation update posts and to see the finished result! Eeek!
Well as a blog reader, this is awesome news! I'm going to love following along. I'm horrible at any type of DIY so I'm not exactly envious, but at the same time, I think being able to plan exactly what you want and make it happen would be really fun. Congratulations and good luck with everything!
This is my dream! Actually I started blogging to document gutting a house (ya know the one that is yet to be purchased?!) Excited to follow along I love a good renovation!!
You were not kidding when you said it needed work! I think I'm stressed for y'all! haha I'm sure it will be so perfect once you are done with the reno!! Good luck friend 🙂
Im so excited for you guys! And I can't wait to see what you do with the house! makes me think i should be a little braver with our house search. xo jillian – cornflake dreams
I agree, that is rather bold! We have done it a couple of times and I can't say it effected our marriage nearly as much as becoming parents did! Honestly some people! Now, this is very exciting, you will be able to pick everything exactly as you want it. I can't wait to see what you do with it X
Yaaaaay! I'm so excited to see what you guys do! And if I'm in town when you're doing something, count me in as an extra pair of hands!
We live in Greenville! Just curious–is it in Gower or maybe around the Augusta Rd area? Greenville is such a great place to raise a family! We raised our two girls here and couldn't have been happier with the schools, etc. I have been reading your blog since the beginning (and I am a Mimi with 4 grandchildren!) and enjoy it so much! Looking forward to watching the progress on your house!
This is so exciting! I loved seeing photos of your Maine house and can't wait to follow this new house adventure 🙂
You can do this! The most important thing to remember is it's yours. And no matter what it looks like, it's yours.
I honestly love this! You can totally do this! Don't let the naysayers get you down, Riley and I have really enjoyed going through our renovation process together and our marriage couldn't be better. And from what I've seen of your previous house you definitely have the eye to pull off a project like this. I cannot wait to follow along! Best of luck, it's going to be a great adventure!
Love it!! Congratulations! I cannot wait to see your style transform in your house and watch it all unfold on the blog!! Good luck!
Congrats; what an adventure this will be! We move a lot too for my husband's job, but still make our house a home each time. 1st house we spent 1 year in, current hiuse we're at two years! I'm anxious for our forever home!
